I live in the Russian River watershed, where remnants of redwood forests & salmon creeks move ordinary people to heroic action. The best help I can offer is sensing the spirit of great animals, painting what I feel, hoping to give them voice.Before I paint, I drum, sing, or play cedar flute. I ask the spirits of animals, trees, waters to guide my hands, my paints, to reach out to those who see my pictures.Sometimes while painting or meditating, I have intense experiences. I’ve felt the horror salmon suffer as stream beds are destroyed, their lives wasted. I’ve felt the delight of a young otter eating its first crayfish. |
